Soil is far more than a growing medium - it is a living ecosystem. Beneath every healthy field exists a complex web of bacteria, fungi, insects, earthworms, and plant roots working together to build soil structure, cycle nutrients, regulate water, increase organic matter, and sustain resilient plant growth.
Healthy soils function because of this complex biology known as the Soil Food Web. As soil microorganisms interact with plant roots, they create stable aggregates, improve pore spaces, increase water infiltration and storage, recycle nutrients, and support diverse and productive ecosystems. When this living network is continuously disrupted by soil plowing and synthetic inputs, soils gradually lose their biological activity and diversity, leading to the loss of soil structure, the loss of organic matter, and ultimately the loss of their ability to capture and retain water. As soil function declines, productivity falls, and resilience to drought decreases, particularly in arid or semi-arid Mediterranean environments.
Desertification soon follows...

At Soil Builders Lab, we are dedicated to restoring the biological health and natural function of Mediterranean soils.
We help rebuild and diversify the Soil Food Web with biologically active compost and diverse plant communities, and protect the soil biology with cover-cropping, and reduced soil plowing with lightweight machinery.
By working with nature's own biological processes, we restore soil structure, improve water infiltration and retention, increase resilience to drought, and create productive farming systems that can thrive for generations without chemical inputs.

Our first pilot project in Athienou, Cyprus, brings together science, agriculture, and innovation to demonstrate how degraded soils can be regenerated naturally using ecosystem functions, improving ecosystem resilience, thus supporting regenerative food production, and creating lasting environmental benefits for future generations.

Bringing hands-on practices and science together
Our interdisciplinary team is formed by highly committed scientists and regenerative agriculture practitioners with international research and applied experience.
